Held each summer, this four-week course* covers the central concepts of Algebra 1, such as linear systems, an introduction to polynomials, and basic algebraic word problems. The course is effective as both an introduction to Algebra 1 and a review before Algebra 2. Techniques such as repetition-based learning, educational games, and progress checks are incorporated to make the lessons digestible and engaging. Office hours and free private lessons are also available as a supplement to the group lessons.
*As math is sequential in nature, successful completion of an official (non-Mission Math) Pre-Algebra course is the prerequisite for Algebra 1. Concurrent enrollment is not permitted.
Our classes are centered around the application of math in the real world to ensure our students see the value of learning.
What are You Going to Learn?
1
Expressions, equations, and inequalities
We will review expressions vs. equations, and then introduce multi-step inequalities. Students will learn how to evaluate these problems and write the domain and range.
2
Graphing linear equations
Students will learn how to graph linear functions in slope-intercept form. We will also cover point-slope form and standard form. Students will become confident in understanding the parts of a graph and graphing lines.
3
Systems of equations
Building on our understanding of linear equations, we will introduce systems of equations. Students will learn how and when to use substitution, elimination, and graphing to evaluate systems of equations.
4
Polynomials
We will start by comparing and contrasting monomials and polynomials. Then, students will learn to factor trinomials using various methods, including the quadratic formula and difference of two squares.
5
Functions
We will compare functions to expressions and equations. Then, students will learn how to interpret function notation and how to evaluate functions.
6
Exponents and Radicals
Students will learn all the exponent properties covered in algebra. Then, they will learn about radicals, primarily focusing on square roots. We will cover the parts of a root and how to simplify square roots, teaching perfect squares.
Garvit, Student
"I enjoyed summer camp of Algebra1 and learned so much. Tutors are awesome and answered all my questions whenever I have. I love the homework they give for extra practice. They are so patient and helpful. I love the way of fun by playing kahoot with lesson topics.Thats my favorite part. I would love to do again next summer too."
Solomon, Student
"The experience was really good. I learned a lot even though I know most of the content. There were interactive experiences such as games and quizzes. One thing that stands out is the office hours where you can relearn things that you couldn't immediately pick up. It is also possible to get one on one tutoring with the teachers if the courses don't fit your needs. Great course I'd definitely recommend."
